Hong Sik-Kim (b.1962)

Artist Kim Hong Sik earned her Ph.D. in Plastic Arts from the Graduate School of Ewha Womans University. Defining herself as a "flâneur" of the city, she develops two-dimensional and installation works based on photographic images and drawings. Her practice explores the gaze of crowds within museums viewing masterpieces and the underlying essence of contemporary life intertwined within those viewpoints.

Kim Hong Sik’s artistic practice explores the relationships between the individual and the city, memory and perception in contemporary society through photography and printmaking. Her early works addressed questions of human desire, identity, and communication through images of the body, everyday objects, text, and symbols. She subsequently expanded her focus to urban landscapes and crowds, examining the alienation of modern individuals and the historical memories embedded in places.

Identifying herself as a “flaneur”, or urban wanderer, Kim documents everyday scenes and events encountered while walking through the city. She reconstructs these photographic images through techniques such as photo-etching and silkscreen printing on stainless steel, developing a distinctive visual language that combines the documentary qualities of photography with the material properties of printmaking.

In Kim’s work, the metal plate functions not merely as a tool for reproducing images but as a medium that bears traces of memory and time. Images etched into its surface retain the representational qualities of photography while producing visual experiences that differ from the original scenes through variations in tone and texture. The reflective properties of metal and changing light conditions also cause the images to appear differently depending on the viewer’s position and movement, connecting recorded moments from the past with the experience of viewing them in the present.

These concerns extend into her museum-based works, which focus on visitors and their gazes as they encounter celebrated works of art. Kim examines how artistic value and authority are established and consumed within the institutional space of the museum, while exploring the relationships between artworks and viewers, and between the subjects and objects of observation. Her practice thus moves beyond the reproduction of recorded images to reflect on what we see, how we see it, and how we construct meaning through the act of looking.
