The work by Wheiza Kim will be exhibited at the Space World Invitational Exhibition of Five Artists, held from June 27 to July 25.
For more than twenty years, Kim has explored the workings of the unconscious, which underlie the activities of the mind. By incorporating mirrors as metaphors for the mind in various ways, she evokes the world of illusions within a kaleidoscope, an approach originating in her kaleidoscopic installation works.
Through images reflected in three different states of mind shaped by reality and unconscious prejudices, and through their subsequent reflection, refraction, and transformation, she creates fantastical imagery that produces three-dimensional sculptural effects.
Her works seek to maximize panoramic visual effects while employing mirrors as metaphors for self-reflection. In some works, she encloses the interior space with mirrors to contain images within the depths of the mind, while in others, she paints directly onto the mirrors.
