To be mindful

2016

I am always observing the changes in my heart throughout life. Seeing the mind is to open it. When the door to a space is closed, it separates the inside and outside, but when the door is open, communication is smooth and there is no distinction. When the heart is open, inside and outside are no longer two. Like the structure of Möbius's strip symbolizing infinity, the midpoint that will become the door's location marks the point where the door is located, forming a seamless connection between inside and outside. Our thoughts can be said to be alive when we feel the operation of the five senses opening the door to the atmosphere and communicating with it. In that state, being mindful of what intention is acting as desire It can be said that you live as the master of your own life.

When you know yourself well, you become able to understand others well, and rather than a relationship of discrimination for the sake of discernment, you become an open relationship based on understanding and dialogue.

Many poets and meditation artists say that not only humans but also animals and plants, soil and water, even within a single grain of sand communicates through sensation, leading to the essence of the universe. The reason we discriminate about good and evil in the world, between ourselves and what lies before us, is because we fail to realize that the relative existence placed in relationships and phenomena is actually a reflection image in our own mirror. Originally, the mind is like a mirror, and unless something is reflected, space and time are inherently absent, in an absolute empty state.

However, something desired in the heart forms like a bubble, creating an illusion distorted by desire and obsession. They fail to realize that it is just a bubble-like fiction. The mind that is always scheming and wishing for something, whether good or evil, constantly seeks, becomes angry and jealous, and people mistakenly think that feeling is the self and struggle and live in that bubble. I believe true art is to stop the moment and become aware of oneself, serving as a yeast agent for the maturation of life. For a long time, I have been meditating on mindfulness.

Inspired by Buddhist scriptures and Zen monks who likened the mind to a mirror, I incorporated mirrors into my works as a component. Seeking to open my heart and communicate with the world, I deeply contemplate the relationship between reality and unreality on the mirror of my mind, reflecting on that relationship — that is my work. To develop the story through metaphor and symbolism, since flat painting could not express intention and concept, I create and create semi-three-dimensional relief forms that unfold in various forms of internal and inevitable forms.

First, there are works created by overlapping the central triangular shape of a rhombus three-dimensional image and the center of a large triangle solid. Within the central triangle, three mirrors reflect at different angles, creating a virtual sphere that appears as if floating in midair. The imaginary space created by the reflection of the three mirrors is merely a form of reality that we see and feel, transformed into different forms of situations by relational factors. Therefore, we cannot avoid even more confusion and illusion. And the three-sided three, Numbers are the fundamental foundation of all relationships in the world, and the number is a thousand Ji. It refers to 'in' and is also a perfect structural concept found in all traditional religions and philosophical ideas of both East and West.

Second, the horizontal elongation reminiscent of a folding screen, mainly depicting wind and waves, involves placing mirrors vertically in each divided line to create a hidden narrative landscape by combining contemplative mind, time, and sincerity. Additionally, by repeatedly applying a panoramic effect to mirror reflections, the work always appears different depending on the gaze's position, and the effect of reflected light always changes depending on the direction of light. In this same form, many works with medium sizes also use horizontal and signboard-like proportions. This is the case with traditional landscape painting after painting landscape scenes, By leaving blank spaces and using tenses there, he aimed to expand the narrative of time and space, and to realize a technique that allows viewers to leisurely stroll through the atmosphere of nature with their minds. I would like to say that instead of the 'sitgu' used in literati paintings, a mirror was used to metaphorically represent the heart. Especially in works that aim to express atmospheric landscapes, natural tree resolution was inevitable. Since the life of the tree is the result of condensing the atmosphere through silence, I chose it hoping that the cosmic energy flowing along its grain would seep into our breath, permeating with a sense of sublimation.

Third, there are works that look like boxes, large and small, always with open windows or entrances at the front. They are designed so that the gaze moves in and out of the painting, looking in. Since you can never know what is unfolding inside just from the surface painting, it arouses curiosity. The image drawn on the back of the surface image and the attachment reflect onto a mirror joined inside, overlapping and connecting the surface image and the inner image, creating confusion in non-manifestation. This association acts like a Möbius strip, where the mirror is in the middle and images are repeatedly reproduced by reflection, creating a seamless beginning and end. It makes me associate with you. As if curious about the mysterious explorations behind the stage curtain, she glanced briefly through the open entrance, only to see her own face reflected in her eyes, and as if her heart had been discovered, she flinched in surprise, seeing her face as yet another unreal image, which made her smile with joy. I say this moment is the moment my Heart Box works are completed. The self, which he considers reality and reality, overlaps with illusions and becomes an illusion within relationships, intended to provide momentary bewilderment and fresh experiences.

I know that most people do not notice the intent or meaning of this moment. However, seeds of doubt are sown in their hearts. I believe that someday, when the conditions are met, that seed will sprout and bring the moment of awareness I wanted to give. For me, artworks should spark curiosity and interest, make us stop in our tracks, and, along with some inspiration, ask ourselves, 'What is this?' and allow viewers to carefully seek out their own answers. I can't put it into words themselves, Like a seed sprout, I realized it—ah! I hope your heart races with emotion and that the wind of closed emotions rises. Through this, I test myself first, hoping to awaken my hidden true self and bring a sense of fullness that seems infinite, even if it may be frail, Carry out the work.
