Gallery d’Arte, 547 West 27th Street, Suite 518, New York City, proudly presents Wheiza Kim’s solo exhibition ใ€ŠDialogue with Nature-Message from the Windใ€‹. The exhibition will run from January 12–23, 2016, with an opening reception on Thursday, January 14, from 5–8 PM.

Wheiza Kim lives in the woods near the ocean, where the wind drifts around her. While relaxing, she can hear the whistle of the wind coming from the ocean and the woods surrounding her house. The wind tells her stories about an unknown and distant world. With its low-pitched whistling sound, the woods convey how human lives are beautiful but also painful, and how everything in the world is transient. Kim says, “My intention is to decipher ‘the message of the universe delivered by the wind,’ which has been engraved in wood grain like secret codes, and then visualize it.”

Kim creates artworks that reflect human life and the mind through the order of Yin and Yang, based on the philosophy of qi (energy). Kim also conveys the meaning of impermanence delivered by the wind: that all conditioned existence, without exception, is an illusion that fluctuates according to conditions and relationships, or according to the state of mind through which a given situation is interpreted. Therefore, Kim creates works analogous to these varying and uncertain states by using mirrors, breaking away from the conventional format of the flat canvas.

Through this exhibition, Kim transforms uniquely shaped canvases into three-dimensional spaces, creating works of art that function, both literally and metaphorically, as shelters through various patterns and geometric compositions. Kim uses natural wooden panels as canvases and places mirrors at different angles on their surfaces and behind them. In this way, Kim brings landscapes and stories together within a single work and invites viewers to observe the inside and outside of the artwork as one continuous movement in which exterior and interior spaces are united. In other words, the infinite merges with the introspective, creating a visual effect reminiscent of a “Möbius loop.”
