In the transcendentalist tradition of landscape painting, it was believed that the mind should not be considered to be separate from nature, and those painters attempted to create art showing or even inviting a union between the mind and nature.

The Korean-born artist Wheiza Kim works with painterly forms and materials as a representation of her search for origins. Her stately paintings reflect the spark by which ideas and human life come into being. This appears as a persistent and enduring element in her work as it is clear in her show ใDialogue with Nature-Message from the Windใ.

Faced with works that contain nearly every element through which one might travel far back into art history and arrive again at the latest contemporary discourse, the artist says with disarming ease that she merely hopes people will enjoy looking at her paintings. Even in conversation, she cannot take her eyes off the viewers who encounter a handle that seems to lower a blind across the sky or who peer at their own faces existing as a flower within a flower. Her words therefore seem sincere.

This month, I encountered two women artists who take everyday life as their subject. They are the painter Wheiza Kim and the sculptor Yang Hwa-sun, two artists whose work is imbued with a distinctly feminine sensibility while reflecting years of sustained exploration. It is not that there is anything particularly unusual about the everyday life they depict. Rather, what is significant is the way they engage with ordinary things around them, capturing them wherever their gaze comes to rest and transforming them into distinctive realms of their own.
