Lee Joo Heon | Art Critic
Wheiza Kimโs work fundamentally combines the characteristics of painting and installation. Rather than simply painting on canvas, she paints on three-dimensional supports such as boxes and folding screens, while mirrors, above all, appear consistently as objects within her work. Mirrors play an essential role in Kimโs artistic practice; one might even say that, more than the meticulously painted images themselves, the mirror serves as the central element of the overall composition.

The Segye Times New Yor
Like many others of my generation, I grew up within the traditions of Korean consciousness. Yet, in the cultural vacuum that followed the Korean War, I came to absorb Western culture through an education that offered little more than a superficial introduction to Western ideas rather than a proper understanding of them.

The work by Wheiza Kim will be exhibited at the Space World Invitational Exhibition of Five Artists, held from June 27 to July 25. For more than twenty years, Kim has explored the workings of the unconscious, which underlie the activities of the mind. By incorporating mirrors as metaphors for the mind in various ways, she evokes the world of illusions within a kaleidoscope, an approach originating in her kaleidoscopic installation works.

This exhibition by Wheiza Kim, held four years after her exhibition at the Seoul Arts Center, is significant in that the questions concerning existence, which the artist has persistently pursued, have undergone further development and found expression in sculptural form.
